What are extraordinary circumstances?

An airline can refuse to pay compensation if the cancellation or delay is due to circumstances
beyond their control, such as:

  • Extreme weather (storms, snow, ash clouds).
  • Security risks or political unrest.
  • Strikes by airport staff or air traffic controllers.

When does this not apply?
Technical faults and staff shortages are not considered extraordinary circumstances. In these cases, you
typically still have the right to compensation.
